Opportunity Cars is a network of more than 150 nonprofit organizations dedicated to increasing private automobile ownership for low wage working families to support their ability to find and retain quality employment.

 

Working Wheels (Washington State) is a comprehensive not-for-profit transportation-to-work program for working families, selling affordable used cars to low-income workers and helping them access living wage career opportunities while improving their credit and financial management skills.

 

Good News Garage Good News Garage's mission is to create economic opportunity by providing affordable and reliable transportation options for people in need in VT, NH, CT and MA.

 

Good News Mountaineer Garage For West Virginia residents that need a car to get to work or job training. A family must be referred by their DHHR case manager. Check eligibility requirements.

 

First Wheels Program First Wheels is a statewide program of the Tennessee RC&D Council which provides no-interest, no-down payment car loans for dependable used cars to eligible participants when transportation is a barrier to finding or keeping a job. Through the First Wheels Program, qualified applicants can get a car loan with no interest, no money down and low monthly payments.

 

Ownership Assistance Programs Listed by state these organizations will help you buy a car under terms that will work for low income families. Not all states have programs listed here, but if yours is listed work with a close to home program.

 

Ways to Work is a national program of Alliance for Children and Families that allows qualified working parents who are unable to get funds elsewhere, to receive loans up to $4,000 to purchase, repair or refinance a car. The first program of its kind in Oregon, Ways to Work is operated locally by Metropolitan Family Service in partnership with Albina Community Bank.

 

Bonnie CLAC (Car Loans And Counseling) is a New Hampshire based nonprofit car purchasing program, established in 2001, to provide financial literacy training, car buying assistance and loan guarantees to individuals from all walks of life.

 

Project Self-Sufficiency  A partnership between the City of Fort Collins Colorado and Project Self-Sufficiency, a local non-profit agency, is helping single parents who need a little assistance, due to income or other circumstances, to keep their cars in working order.

 

The IBC Car Care Ministry, in Irving Texas, is focused on helping those in need with transportation issues. Its activities include cars for needy individuals.

 

KEYS Auto Loan Program  Martinez, California (Contra Costa County) The KEYS Auto Loan Program is intended to provide auto loans to help CalWORKs participants, including those on retention services, to purchase a vehicle. The loan has a maximum dollar amount of $4,000 and a 2-year term. This auto loan program targets those participants for whom an automobile is the only practical means of transportation to employment or training, and who would otherwise not be able to obtain an auto loan.

 

Jump Start, West Central Wisconsin When America set out to replace welfare with work, it was generally recognized that transportation to jobs would be a major concern for new workers. JumpStart meets this need by assisting low-income families in obtaining reliable, affordable and fuel-efficient transportation.

Vehicles for Change, Maryland and Virginia Vehicles for Change Inc, (VFC) the mission is to assist less fortunate families who are ready, willing, and able to advance themselves, become financially secure and help others. VFC will assist these families by selling them a reliable automobile at a minimal price and assist in identifying resources to pay for insurance, title, tags and taxes.
